Food & Dining

China's food scene is incredible. Here's how to navigate it without speaking Chinese.

QR Code Ordering
Many restaurants are scan-only. No waiter, no paper menu.
1
Scan QR on table

Use WeChat or Alipay to scan the QR code on the table.

2
Browse menu

A digital menu appears. Photos of every dish. Use your phone's translate feature if needed.

3
Order & pay

Select items, confirm, and pay directly through the mini-program. Food arrives at your table.

Tip: If the QR menu is Chinese-only, try these options: (1) Alipay can often auto-translate QR code menus into English within the mini-program; (2) Use your phone's camera translate (Apple Translate or Google Lens) to read it in real-time.
Meituan Food Delivery
China's food delivery + restaurant discovery app.
1
Open Alipay

Search "Meituan" or find it in the mini-programs section.

2
Browse Nearby

The app shows restaurants near your location with photos and ratings.

3
Select Items

Tap photos to add items to your cart. Use the translate feature in WeChat to read menus.

4
Set Address

Use your hotel address (in Chinese). Always include your room number! Copy-paste from your saved notes.

5
Pay & Wait

Pay with Alipay. Delivery usually takes 20-40 minutes. The driver will call when arriving.

Robot Delivery: In many modern hotels, your food will be delivered by a robot that rides the elevator to your floor! It will call your room phone when it arrives at your door. Open the lid to get your food.

Must-try Chinese street food classics

Dianping (大众点评) is the go-to app for restaurant ratings, reviews, and photos. Think Yelp + Google Reviews combined. Note: the interface is Chinese-only — use your phone's built-in translate feature or screenshot-translate to navigate.

How to use: Search in Alipay or download the standalone app. Browse nearby restaurants, check star ratings, see real food photos from diners, and read reviews (use translate).

Gaode Maps (高德地图) also shows restaurant ratings and can navigate you there. Tap any restaurant pin on the map to see ratings and reviews.

Chopstick Basics & Etiquette
Key rules to avoid cultural faux pas at the table.
Don't
  • Stick chopsticks vertically in rice (resembles funeral incense)
  • Point at people with chopsticks
  • Tap bowls with chopsticks (associated with begging)
  • Cross chopsticks on the table
Do
  • Rest chopsticks on the holder or plate edge
  • Use serving chopsticks for shared dishes
  • Ask for a fork and spoon if needed
  • Place chopsticks side by side when finished
Public and personal chopsticks
Two Pairs of Chopsticks?
Many restaurants provide two pairs per person: one is your personal pair for eating, and the other (often longer, different color, or on a separate holder) is the 公筷 (public chopsticks) for serving from shared dishes. Always use the public pair to pick food from communal plates, then eat with your personal pair.

Sample WhatsApp Conversation
You
Hi! Can you help me book a nice Sichuan restaurant near The Bund tonight? 2 people, 7pm.
trisAino Concierge
Of course! I recommend Chuan Jia Ben Bang - authentic Sichuan, locals' favorite. I'll call and book for 7pm. Any spice preference?
You
Medium spice please! Also, can you send me the address in Chinese for the taxi?
trisAino Concierge
Booked! Here's the address for your taxi driver:

川家本帮
上海市黄浦区中山东一路外滩附近
Zhongshan Dong Yi Lu, near The Bund, Huangpu District

Show this to your DiDi driver. Enjoy dinner!
Sample WeChat Conversation
You
Hey! I need tickets to the Great Wall at Mutianyu tomorrow for 2 adults. Can you help?
trisAino Concierge
Absolutely! Mutianyu is a great choice - less crowded than Badaling. Tickets are 40 RMB/person + 120 RMB round-trip cable car. Want me to book both?
You
Yes please! Also, what's the best way to get there from Dongzhimen?
trisAino Concierge
Tickets booked! For transport:

慕田峪长城
北京市怀柔区渲海镇慕田峪村
Mutianyu Village, Bohai Town, Huairou District

I recommend booking a DiDi for ~150 RMB one way (~1.5 hrs). Want me to arrange a round-trip driver instead? About 500 RMB for the day with waiting time.
