How to shop without learning every app
For a short China trip, the trick is not downloading everything. Use each channel for one job, and move offline when timing, size, scent, or returns matter.
REDnote / Xiaohongshu 小红书
Use it to decide what is worth buying. Search for real photos, store visits, ranking posts, and Chinese keywords. Save screenshots of product names before moving to a shopping app or store.
Best for: discovery, trends, beauty, lifestyle, local store photos, and checking whether something still feels current.
Taobao / Tmall 淘宝 / 天猫
Use it when you have time. Taobao is broad and messy; Tmall is usually a better first stop for official flagship stores, branded beauty, fashion, snacks, and home goods.
Watch for: pre-sale, deposit, estimated shipping, no-return items, seller messages, and delivery dates that land after checkout.
JD 京东
Use it when logistics matter more than browsing. JD is often easier for practical goods, electronics, beauty basics, home appliances, and items where clear delivery timing matters.
Good for: chargers, small tech, replacement items, and things you need delivered quickly to a hotel or address.
Offline stores
Use stores when you need confidence. Scent, skincare texture, clothing fit, bag weight, packaging quality, and last-minute gifts are easier to judge in person.
Best for: same-day purchases, trying before buying, gift packaging, and avoiding delivery or return friction.
Gift directions that usually work
The best travel gifts are not always the most famous. They are small enough to pack, specific enough to feel local, and safe enough that you will not regret buying them the night before departure.
Small gifts that travel well
Fragrance samples, hand cream, tea tins, silk accessories, stationery, small home objects, packaged snacks, bag charms, and beauty tools.
Design & lifestyle
Look for candles, incense, ceramics, tableware, textiles, independent Chinese design brands, and objects with good packaging.
Beauty & self-care
Skincare, body care, makeup, fragrance, sunscreen, hair tools, and local beauty discoveries work well if you check ingredients and shades.
Tea, snacks & pantry
Choose sealed items with clear expiration dates. Avoid fresh, oily, fragile, liquid-heavy, or customs-complicated food if you are unsure.
Small tech & travel tools
Chargers, power banks, hair dryers, mini shavers, massagers, and creator gear can be useful, but check plug type, battery rules, and warranty region.
Last-minute gifts
Go offline: malls, official stores, bookstore lifestyle sections, museum shops, beauty counters, tea stores, and curated boutiques are calmer than app shopping.

Why we like it: The famous POP MART, back at its source. Come see it in China: bigger stores, more characters, and the full local pop-culture energy around it.
Best for: Small gifts, collectibles, blind boxes, and a quick playful stop.
Chinese Wines Worth Ordering
China’s wine scene is easy to miss if you only look for the big international labels. These are two names we would happily point out to a friend at dinner in China. You may not find them everywhere, but if they appear on a thoughtful restaurant or wine-bar list, they are worth considering.
Why we like it: A good pick when you want something local, unexpected, and not too formal. It feels more like a restaurant discovery than a souvenir bottle.
Best for: Modern Chinese bistros, wine bars, curious drinkers, and dinners where you want to try something local.
Why we like it: One of the Chinese wine names we would feel comfortable recommending to someone curious about local bottles. It is a good way to try a more polished side of China’s boutique wine scene.
Founder’s note: One bottle we personally find fascinating is their sparkling white that blends Chardonnay with rice wine. If it appears on a wine list, we would ask the staff about it.
Modern Practical Tech
Why we like it: Cheap, useful, and often surprisingly good. Xiaomi is where many visiting friends end up buying small practical tools they did not plan to buy, but immediately understand.
Founder’s favorites: Neck massagers, compact car vacuums, hair dryers, mini shavers, chargers, power banks, and small travel-friendly electronics.
Why we like it: One of the clearest global symbols of Chinese consumer technology and imaging hardware.
Best for: Handheld imaging devices, Osmo, action cameras, microphones, stabilizers, and creator gear.
You do not need every Chinese shopping app. If you are staying briefly, start with malls, official stores, selected boutiques, and brand mini-programs. Use shopping apps only when they clearly save time or unlock something you cannot find offline.

Taobao can be useful if you have enough time to receive packages and can tolerate Chinese-language friction. It is not always easy for short-stay travelers: registration, SMS verification, payment, hotel delivery, seller communication, and returns can all become blockers.
