Golf in China: Lakes, Lava and a View of the Great Wall

Where to play, what a round really costs, and what to have ready when you hand your clubs to a caddie.

A lake beyond the green is a lovely distraction. The Great Wall on the horizon is a rather more difficult one to ignore.

At Topwin Golf & Country Club outside Beijing, that backdrop is part of the appeal. The European Tour’s coverage describes a course among orchards and wooded hills with views of the Wall. It is a compelling reason to pack your clubs for China, even if your scorecard might prefer fewer distractions. European Tour’s course introduction

Elsewhere, the landscape changes completely: lakeside golf in Yunnan, sea-facing holes on Hainan, fairways threaded through black volcanic rock. The useful first question is which version of China you want around your next round.

Yunnan: give the lake a place on your itinerary

For a golf-led holiday, Kunming is a strong starting point. At Spring City Golf & Lake Resort, 春城湖畔, two courses give you a reason to stay beyond one round: Robert Trent Jones Jr.’s Lakeview Course follows Yangzong Lake, while Jack Nicklaus’s Mountainview Course works through rolling terrain. Spring City’s course guide

The attraction is having time to settle into that setting. Play one layout, have an unhurried dinner, and return to a different design the next morning. A second round at the same resort can add more to a short holiday than another airport transfer.

For something more dramatic, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Golf Club, 玉龙雪山高尔夫, in Lijiang sets your round beneath the mountain itself. The Nelson & Haworth design sits above 10,000 feet: altitude is part of the experience, as well as the view. Give this stop its own time rather than squeezing it between arrival and another long journey. Mountain visibility and snow cover vary. The designer’s account

Dali Canghai, 大理苍海, offers another setting between the Cangshan mountains and Erhai Lake. Kunming, Dali and Lijiang each deserve their own base. Course listing

Spring and autumn are useful planning windows around Kunming. Pack a morning layer, and allow for summer rain; Yunnan’s elevations make a single province-wide weather promise unhelpful. Seasonal golf guide

Hainan: choose your coast, or choose the lava

Hainan is the natural shortlist for winter golf. November to March is a particularly appealing window for escaping colder weather, while summer brings more heat, humidity and rain. CGE Golf’s seasonal guidance

The island offers several quite different holidays. In Wanning, The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula, 神州半岛高尔夫, has East and West courses designed by Tom Weiskopf and Phil Smith. Coastal terrain and sea views give it a distinctive sense of place. The Dunes course profile

In Haikou, Mission Hills Blackstone, 观澜湖黑石球场, puts black lava rock beside bright turf, with old stone walls and mature trees incorporated into Brian Curley’s design. The rock is part of the course’s identity, rather than a decorative detail. Mission Hills’ Blackstone guide

For a beach holiday with golf woven into it, consider Yalong Bay Golf Club, 亚龙湾高尔夫, in Sanya. Haikou, Wanning and Sanya are different bases: choose the course and hotel together before imagining an effortless island-wide golf crawl. Hainan’s destination guide

Beijing: yes, you can play with a Great Wall view

Topwin Golf & Country Club, 通盈·雁栖湖高尔夫, in Huairou is the standout here. Ian Woosnam’s design hosted the Volvo China Open, and both the designer and European Tour document its Great Wall views. Visibility still depends on the weather; book for the whole course, with the backdrop as a bonus. Designer’s project page

For Beijing, favour spring or autumn and leave room for the drive out of the city. Confirm guest access before fixing the rest of the day. Seasonal planning reference

Qingdao: a round, then a hot spring

Qingdao gives you another way to build a golf holiday around the coast. For a resort stay, look at Tiantai Mountain Golf Club, 青岛天泰山高尔夫, also listed as Tiantai Hot Spring Golf Club. Its 27-hole mountain layout is in Jimo’s hot-spring district, making a round followed by a soak an appealing plan. Check which hot-spring facilities your hotel booking includes. Tiantai course guide

Choose your base deliberately: a golf-focused stay in Jimo and a city break in central Qingdao are different itineraries. Leave time for the transfer if you want both.

Dalian: head into the hills

Dalian belongs on the shortlist too, with a different landscape waiting beyond the waterfront. Red Flag Valley Golf Club, 红旗谷高尔夫, sits in the West Suburb National Forest Park area. Its mountain terrain and wooded setting make the hills the attraction here. Liaoning’s official park introduction, club profile

Build the day around the round, then return to the city for dinner. Red Flag Valley is a private club, so arrange visitor access and confirm the layout and tee time before committing to the rest of the trip.

Guangdong and Shanghai: golf within a wider trip

Around Shenzhen and Dongguan, Mission Hills offers a broad choice of named courses, including World Cup and Olazabal. Specify the course and clubhouse when booking: “Mission Hills” alone is an incomplete destination. The official site distinguishes its Guangdong courses from those in Haikou. Around Shanghai, Sheshan is a famous name, with a Nelson & Haworth design and a history of hosting the HSBC Champions. It is private, so visitor access needs arranging. Treat it as a request to investigate, not a guaranteed tee time. Sheshan course profile

What should you budget for 18 holes?

For planning, allow roughly RMB 600–1,200 for a less expensive round booking, and RMB 1,200–2,500 or more for a premium resort or sought-after course, before any excluded extras. These are working budget bands, not a national average.

For context, BaiGolf’s public listings checked for this article advertised these starting prices:

Course Advertised “from” price
Beijing Jinghua RMB 580
Dali Canghai RMB 828
Mission Hills Haikou, Course 1 / Blackstone RMB 1,398
Spring City Lakeview RMB 2,058

Dates, visitor eligibility and inclusions can change the checkout price. These figures are examples, not confirmed quotations for your trip. BaiGolf listings

The money you hand to your caddie

Expect caddie-supported golf at the featured resorts. Mission Hills Shenzhen explicitly requires a caddie and cart. Official tariff

For the tip paid directly to your caddie, RMB 200 per golfer for 18 holes is a useful starting allowance; carrying RMB 200–300 gives some flexibility. BaiGolf’s guide starts one-to-one service at RMB 200, and one caddie serving two golfers at RMB 300 total, rising to RMB 400 total in its Sanya guidance. Confirm the local expectation and whether a quoted amount is per player or per caddie. Tipping guide

Keep the arithmetic simple: confirmed round price + excluded extras + agreed caddie tip. A package can say “caddie included” while excluding the direct tip, as a published Spring City package illustrates. Ask what remains payable at the course; do not add a second generic caddie charge yourself. Example of package wording

A hypothetical RMB 1,000 package with cart and caddie arrangements included, plus a RMB 200 direct tip, becomes RMB 1,200 before transport, food or rental clubs.

You can generally rent a full set of clubs at the resort courses visitors are likely to book, so bringing your own golf bag is optional. Reserve ahead if you need left-handed clubs or a particular shaft flex. As published examples, The Dunes lists rental clubs at RMB 350 through BaiGolf, while Mission Hills lists an adult set at RMB 400. Confirm the set and price with your booking. The Dunes rental listing, Mission Hills rental tariff.

A few things to settle before the first tee

For ordinary recreational rounds in mainland China, a formal handicap certificate is often not requested. That is a common practice, not a universal exemption: reciprocal-club bookings and competitions can require proof. Ask about your specific booking, and bring your digital handicap record if you have one. General visitor guidance, a documented Mission Hills reciprocal-booking exception.

Confirm the full price, caddie arrangement, rental set and cancellation terms in writing. Wear proper golf clothing and soft-spike shoes, arrive at least 30 minutes early, and expect a small party to be paired with other golfers. BaiGolf’s booking guidance

Ask about English-speaking assistance if needed, and confirm how the direct tip should be paid. Choose tees that suit your game and keep pace. Your caddie can help with the course; the swing remains yours.

Then look up occasionally. You have brought your clubs a long way. The lake, the lava and the ridge beyond the fairway deserve a little attention too.
