How Should You Save and Show Chinese Addresses So Drivers, Hotels and Couriers Can Find You?

One destination can have four different “addresses”

Travelers often treat an address, a place name and a map pin as interchangeable. They are not.

A hotel may occupy one tower inside a large complex. A museum may have one gate for visitors and another address used for administration. A railway station may have several vehicle entrances and regulated pickup areas. A restaurant may be on the fifth floor of a mall whose street address lands you at the opposite side of the block.

That is why adding more address text does not always solve the problem. The missing information is often the final 100 metres.

Build one reusable China address card

Use this format for hotels, restaurants, meeting venues and any place you cannot afford to miss:

Ask the hotel, host, venue or local contact to supply the Chinese text. Do not build the Chinese version by translating an English booking-page address word by word.

For a hotel, include the exact branch name and lobby entrance. For a restaurant, add the mall or compound, floor and unit. For a private address, add the residential compound, building, unit and room only when the recipient has given permission to store and share them.

How Chinese address order works—and when order is not the main problem

In Chinese script, addresses normally run from the largest area to the smallest. The Universal Postal Union documents that order for Chinese-language postal addresses; Latin-script international mail commonly reverses it.

For a taxi ride, however, perfect postal formatting is less important than having the correct Chinese place name and entrance. Drivers navigate to places, gates and pickup zones—not to the typographic order of an overseas mailing label.

Use the formal address as the stable identity layer. Add the entrance as the operational layer.

For taxis and ride-hailing: select the door, not just the landmark

When searching in a map or ride-hailing app:

1. Search the Chinese place name when possible.
2. Check the district and nearby road before confirming.
3. Look for separate pins for gates, towers or hotel branches.
4. Place the pickup pin where a car can legally stop—not wherever your GPS dot happens to be.
5. Screenshot the selected point and its Chinese label.

Amap now provides multilingual navigation and ride-hailing tools for international visitors, including translated place information and pickup details. That makes discovery easier, but it does not remove the need to confirm the exact branch or entrance.

If a driver calls, the most useful response may be a short location message rather than a long spoken explanation. Ask a hotel or local contact to prepare one sentence such as:

请到酒店正门，我在大堂门口等您。
Please come to the hotel’s main entrance. I am waiting by the lobby door.

Only use a sentence that matches where you are actually standing.

For hotels: save the property’s Chinese identity before arrival

An international booking platform may display a translated hotel name that differs from the sign, the map listing or the name familiar to local drivers. Chains can also have several branches in one district.

Before arrival, save:

• The hotel name in Chinese.
• The full Chinese address.
• The specific branch or building.
• The lobby entrance or driveway.
• The front-desk number.
• A screenshot of the booking confirmation with the guest name.

When leaving the hotel, ask reception to confirm the destination and pickup point in Chinese. When returning, the hotel card should get you back to the property even if your map history disappears.

For food delivery and couriers: the street address is only the first layer

Delivery usually needs more than the road and building number. A rider may still need:

• A reachable recipient number.
• The compound or mall gate.
• Building or tower.
• Floor and room, or permission to leave the order at reception.
• A short note describing the handoff point.

Do not enter a hotel employee’s number without asking. If the platform does not reliably support your number, ask the hotel whether reception can accept the order and which contact details you may use.

Keep the address and handoff instruction consistent. “Leave at reception” is not useful when the pin points to a service entrance on the other side of the complex.

For stations, airports and attractions: save the transport interface

“Shanghai Hongqiao” is not a complete car instruction. A large transport hub can contain train, metro, airport and road-transport areas with different entrances and pickup rules.

Save the terminal or station, departure or arrival level, gate or pickup zone, and the relevant entrance. For an attraction, check which gate admits visitors with your ticket type. For a shopping centre, save the entrance closest to the store or restaurant, not merely the centre of the building.

For a casual café, this may be unnecessary. For an airport transfer, medical appointment, train departure or late-night hotel arrival, it is worth doing every time.

The editorial rule: save the handoff, not just the destination

The first question gets you to the property. The second gets you to the right person, car or counter. Saving both turns a location from something you can search for into somewhere you can reliably arrive.
