How to Avoid Going to the Wrong Train Station in China

Same city. Different stations. One small check before you leave.

How do you know which train station to go to in China? Open your current, confirmed train booking and check the full departure-station name—not just the city. Match that name to the railway station selected in your map or taxi app. Shanghai Railway Station and Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, for example, are different places. Choose a station for convenience before buying; after booking, plan around the station on your ticket unless the railway confirms an alternative.

Your bag is packed. The train time is saved. You open a map and type “Shanghai train station.” It feels like the last easy step—but the city name alone is not enough.

There is nothing unusual about a large city having several railway stations. Nor does one automatically offer a better travel experience than another. If suitable services leave from different stations, the useful comparison is practical: the departure time, available seats, and the journey from your hotel.

Once you have booked, however, “the closest station” and “the station for this train” are two different questions.

Before booking: compare convenience. After booking: check the name.

Before paying, look at the actual departure and arrival stations for each option. A convenient train time can become less convenient if it involves a longer trip across the city. Compare the whole journey, not just the time on the train.

After paying, use the latest confirmed order as your starting point. If you change the booking, repeat the station check. Do not navigate using an earlier screenshot or a search result you considered but never bought.

Similar city names do not mean the same station

The extra word is part of the station's identity. Keep Hongqiao, South or West when searching or showing a destination to someone. In Chinese, 南 means south and 西 means west; neither should be dropped from the name.

The check to make before leaving your hotel

1. Open the booking you will actually use

Read the travel date, train number, departure time and full departure-station name together. Make sure you are reading the departure station, not the destination at the other end of the journey. If you booked through an agent, ask them to clarify any shortened station name in the confirmation.

2. Match the station in your map or taxi app

Use the full name and check the Chinese name if it is available. Compare it with the booking rather than accepting the first suggested destination. For example, an order departing from Shanghai Hongqiao should lead you to the railway-station destination for 上海虹桥站, not to Shanghai Railway Station.

An airport terminal, a nearby hotel, a metro entrance and a railway departure entrance are not interchangeable destinations. At a transport hub, read the complete place label—not just the shared neighbourhood or hub name.

3. Check the entrance only after checking the station

The station name answers which place. A departure entrance or drop-off point answers where at that place. First confirm the railway station; then use current signs, app information or staff guidance to find an appropriate departure entrance.

A “south entrance” is not necessarily a station called “South.” Do not turn an entrance direction into a different station name.

4. Keep the name ready to show

Leave time for more than the ride

Reaching the building is not the same as reaching your train. Allow for traffic, walking, security, identity checks and finding the boarding gate. Bring the original identity document used for the booking, and ask staff for help if your passport needs manual processing.

Can you board at another station in the same city?

Not simply because it is in the same city. There is an important distinction between switching to an unrelated station and joining your booked train at a later stop.

12306 states that passengers may board at an intermediate station on the date and train specified on the ticket; the unused part of the fare is not refunded. That is not permission to choose any nearby station. For a straightforward departure, use the station on your current booking. Do not assume your train also calls at another station just because both names include Shanghai or Beijing.

Already at the wrong station?

Stop and show your booking to railway staff. Ask them to confirm the intended departure station, then check whether getting there before the boarding cutoff is realistic. Do not rely on the driving-time estimate alone, and do not board a different train assuming your ticket will cover it.
